Very much agree with the ideas here. I've used a process that is focused around bidding where departments submit plans and the time they need. This enables them to be blocked from cover requests and address any issues.
Thanks for sharing, Nick - that sounds like a really smart approach, and I’m sure it helps create more fairness and foresight. Giving departments the space to plan ahead and protect their time makes a lot of sense. I can see how cover pressure could be reduced when it’s approached like this too.
I'm very much enjoying the series because it breaks down in clear terms, some of the nuts and bolts of managing and running a good department and school. For most people, this is not very interesting, but it is absolutely what provides the framework for people to do their best work.
